Eat Healthy!

Eat Healthy!

Did you know eating microgreens provides many healthy benefits? Microgreens contain powerful antioxidants that can help protect against certain diseases. Microgreens contain vitamins, carotenoids, polyphenols, and glucosinolates, which may help prevent cancer. According to the Cleveland Clinc, research on microgreens is still in the early stages,

Did You Know?

Did You Know?

We recently worked with Plum Markets to do some demos and sampling of our microgreens at 3 of their stores. One of the most common questions relayed back to us from the demonstrators was, “What are microgreens and why should I eat them?” It’s a question we also get a lot at our booth at the farmers’ market.
Microgreens are the beginning stage of the plant and they are normally 9-12 days old when harvested. Unlike sprouts, they are a miniature version of the full-grown plant. In most cases, they taste just like the full-grown plant.
So what’s so special about adding them to your diet? For one, they contain up to 40% more nutrients than the full-grown version of the same plant according to a USDA study. You don’t have to eat as much to get the same amount of nutritional value. They’re packed with vitamins, nutrients that supercharge your immune system and in some cases chemicals that inhibit the growth of cancer cells.
Check out our microgreens at the Birmingham Farmers’ Market this Sunday, Plum Markets, Papa Joes, Zerbos Markets or Westborn Markets.

Benefits of Microgreens

Microgreens are young vegetable greens that are harvested just after the first leaves have developed. Packed with nutrients, these tiny greens are often used to enhance the flavor, texture, and visual appeal of dishes. They come in a variety of flavors, from spicy radish to

Farm Questions Answered

Farm Questions Answered

People continually ask us when we’re at the farmers’ market whether we grow our own microgreens? Do we grow them at our house? Are they organic? Do I need to wash them? Do you just sell at the Birmingham Farmers’ Market? Here are some answers:

Yes, we grow our microgreens year-round under lights in a building in the Wyoming/W. Chicago area of Detroit. We bought a 66-year-old, 17,000 sq ft building in 2017 that had been vacant for 10 years. It was vandalized and stripped, but we cleaned and renovated it. We also have 2 city lots where we grow flowers and vegetables for our families and local seniors.
We are not an organic farm, but we do not use any pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, or chemicals. We use non-GMO and some organic seeds. Our produce is safety certified by the Michigan Dept of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) and we have completed a USDA Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) audit.
“Rinse before Enjoying” is on our labels. Unlike field-grown produce, our microgreens are grown indoors and harvested under sanitary conditions. Our staff wears gloves, protective clothing, and hairnets. We chill our produce after harvest until delivery.
Our microgreens are available in 12 grocery stores in the Metro Detroit area. We also supply a number of restaurants and private caterers along with 3 major produce wholesalers.
Hope that answers your questions.
