Growing 38 varieties of microgreens sustainabily in Detroit

Mondays!?!

Mondays….the start of the week after a weekend of markets. Mondays at MCMF are busy days like most others. We have over 100 trays to wash, scrub and dry from last week’s harvest. 20 to refill and sow today for the markets and orders over the next 2 weeks. We sow trays every day based on our upcoming orders and markets. Some, like Arugula, germinate and grow fast. Others like beets and basil take almost a full 2 weeks. After the trays are filled with soil, sown and moistened, they are stacked, covered and weighted down in a dark area to germinate for 2/5 days. Once the seeds germinate, the weights are removed and the trays unstacked. They are then put on racks and covered for a day or two. Following the backout period, they are put under grow lights until ready for market. They are watered every morning after we feed our Motor City Sea Farm shrimp (animals come first) and checked again in the late afternoon.

Just a little insight into our microgreens world.

Just got done ordering all the plants and seeds for Kelly’s 2025 flower garden down on the farm. She’ll have bouquets galore again this year at the Birmingham Farmers’ Market. Looking forward to seeing everyone again this year.
