Growing 32 varieties of microgreens sustainabily in Detroit

Microgreens-Tiny Powerhouses of Nutrition

At the Birmingham Farmers’ Market, people often stop at our booth and ask “What are microgreens and what do I do with them?” I guess a little education is in order.

Microgreens are the beginning stage of the plant. They are typically 9-12 days old when harvested. In many cases, they taste just like the adult plant. Broccoli tastes like broccoli, and arugula has the same peppery flavor the adult version has. Here’s the important part, a USDA study has confirmed that microgreens have up to 40% more nutrients than the adult version of the plant! You get more nutrition while eating less. Our microgreens are grown at our farm year-round in Detroit, using Non-GMO seeds in soil without the use of any pesticides, fertilizers or chemicals. We harvest within 24 hours of delivery to ensure freshness.

What can you do with them? Pretty much anything! Use them as toppings on eggs, pizza, sandwiches, burgers, toast, use them as salads or additions to salads or in smoothies to get that boost. Uses are endless.

Where can you get these locally grown nutritional wonders? Plum Markets, Zerbos Markets, Westborn Markets, Better Health Markets, Papa Joes, Sundays at the Birmingham Farmers’ Market or online at Market Wagon.
